I can remember the first time I ever changed my guitar strings. This was long before my luthier days and long before my guitar repair days. I turned and turned and turned the tuners to get the strings off of them. Then I had to turn and turn the tuners to get the strings back on the tuner posts. I thought to myself there has to be some easier way to do this. It turns out there was. A guitar string winder can be a repairman and guitarists best friend.
A guitar string winder has a handle that is attached to a level that spins on its mounting pin. The level cups the guitar tuner's button. Once the string winder is placed on the guitar tuner, you can spin the level with the string winder handle. The level spins and turns the tuning button. It's as simple as that.
Every guitarist whether he is a luthier or repairman should own one of these. A guitar string winder is such a time saver especially for repairman. Every time you have to string a guitar, you save time. There really is no replacement for a guitar string winder. I suggest that you not only get one, you should get a couple to keep in your guitar cases and guitar repair bench. Guitar string winders are cheap and they save tons of time. It's one of the handiest guitar repair tools. If you would like more information about how to restring a guitar, please see my how to restring a guitar article.
